Backstory

Shak'ir was an orphan of a wandering tribe in the Sangolii desert. He hardly remembers his birth family to this day, a fact that doesn't seem to bother him all too much. Due to having no real parents, he lived in the slums of Ul'dah as a bit of a mischief-maker. While he did petty thievery, he was also fond of plucking practically worthless items and selling them at higher prices with the art of salesmanship. He was a convincing talker, even managing to trick many of the other children into thinking he was of royal blood.

While he was peddling a fraudulent necklace that he had "found in ancient ruins", a Lalafell man named Yayamanu Sasamanu recognized the boy's talent in swindling. As the head of a jewelry business closely tied to the Goldsmith's guild, he also noticed the boy's eye for finery and attention to detail. He took the orphan under his wing when he was only 10 years old, letting him keep the birth name he already had: Shak'ir Hassan (though some called him Shak'ir Sasamanu.) He adapted quickly to this more lavish way of living and fell in love with the art of jewelry. Soon, he was peddling legitimate works, though inflating the prices a little for his own amusement and to impress his father with revenue.

But with all this freedom and luxury, he still couldn't truly stay in one place. He was infected with wanderlust and a deep desire for information, perhaps above his love for fanciful things. He willingly slipped into unsavory places just to speak to the people there, trading useful information and secrets as he went. This lifestyle was a gamble for him and a gamble he was completely enamoured with. From the slums to the Gold Saucer, you could find him almost anywhere with people, much to the chagrin of his adopted father.
